Dosbarth Mesen is a supportive and engaging Key Stage 2 class within our Pupil Referral Unit, where strong relationships and wellbeing underpin everything we do. We create a calm and structured environment where learners feel safe, respected and understood, enabling them to rebuild confidence and re-engage positively with learning.

We recognise that every child’s experiences are different. Through consistent routines, clear expectations and a trauma-informed approach, we help pupils develop emotional regulation, resilience and the skills needed to work and socialise successfully with others. Wellbeing is the foundation from which academic progress can grow.

Our curriculum is practical, creative and purposeful. Cooking is a much-loved part of our provision, allowing learners to develop independence and essential life skills while exploring a range of dishes, from homemade pizzas and flavourful corned beef pie to healthy snacks and seasonal recipes. Music provides a powerful outlet for expression, confidence-building and teamwork, helping pupils discover their strengths and interests.

Outdoor learning plays a central role in Dosbarth Mesen. Through Forest Schools and gardening, pupils build patience, responsibility and pride as they care for their environment and watch their efforts flourish. These experiences promote wellbeing while developing problem-solving skills, cooperation and a sense of achievement.

Within our classroom, we encourage curiosity, independence and ambition at a pace that is right for each learner. Activities are carefully adapted to meet individual needs, ensuring that all pupils experience success and develop a positive sense of themselves as capable learners.

Many of our pupils are supported to maintain or rebuild links with their mainstream schools. For some learners, this includes attending their mainstream setting on a Wednesday, where staff provide outreach support to ensure a consistent and successful transition. This approach allows pupils to practise their developing skills in a familiar environment while continuing to benefit from the structure and support of our provision. Our outreach work strengthens relationships between home, school and the PRU, helping pupils move forward with confidence and stability
