Numeracy and Mathematics

Mathematics @ Ty Dysgu

Our aim is for every pupil to feel confident and supported in maths. We want lessons to be enjoyable, practical and clearly linked to real life, helping pupils see the value of maths in everyday situations.

We focus on building strong numeracy skills that prepare pupils for life and for their next steps. All pupils work towards the most suitable qualification for them, whether Entry Level, Foundation or Intermediate, and we are preparing learners for the new Mathematics GCSE, including important financial skills.

Our curriculum follows the Welsh Curriculum and develops the five key mathematical proficiencies:

·         Conceptual Understanding – developing secure understanding of mathematical ideas and how they connect.

·         Communication Using Symbols – enabling learners to use mathematical notation clearly and confidently.

·         Fluency – building accuracy, efficiency, and confidence with number, algebra, geometry, and data skills.

·         Logical Reasoning – encouraging learners to explain, justify, and evaluate mathematical conclusions.

·         Strategic Competence – supporting learners to choose methods, plan approaches, and solve problems independently.

Overall, our vision is to help every pupil feel capable, prepared and proud of their progress in maths.
