Welcome to the English Department, where we focus on skills, understanding, and personal growth through the New Curriculum for Wales. We provide a safe, supportive, and trauma-informed environment where every student can find their voice and thrive.
Our core goal is to help students become confident communicators, critical thinkers, and empathetic citizens. We achieve this by linking literature to real-world issues, helping students process complex feelings and understand the world around them.
Our curriculum is designed to be highly relevant. We use engaging novels like Patrice Lawrence’s Orangeboy (for GCSE) and texts like Kensuke's Kingdom, Holes, and Cirque Du Freak to explore essential themes.
Crucially, we integrate our reading with important International Recognition Days. This includes PRIDE month, Black History Month, Holocaust Memorial Day, and Remembrance Day. We also address crucial topics like War Child and World Mental Health Day, ensuring students develop the knowledge and emotional literacy they need. Every lesson is an opportunity to learn not just English, but about themselves and their community and the wider world.
